Virtue does not consist in apprehensions and feelings of God, however sublime they may be, or in any similar experience. But because being one with Christ is our sanctity, and progressively becoming one with him our happiness on earth, the love of the cross in no way contradicts being a joyful child of God. Turn your eyes upon yourself and look at yourself inwardly, as I have said. He is full of compassion and never fails those who are afflicted and out of favor if they trust in Him alone.

Nothing kept her from giving of herself outwardly when it was a question of performing charity; the gospel tells us that Mary went with haste into the hill country of Judah in order to be of help to her cousin, Elizabeth. The ineffable visions which she contemplated within her will never diminish her exterior charity.
